Founded in 2008, located at the Langfang Economic & Technical Development Zone, the Pipeline Welding Lab (PWL) is based on Pipeline Research Institute of CNPC (PRIC). With the strong cultivation of leaders at all levels and the concerted efforts of all staff, PWL has developed into a general laboratory integrating welding technology research, popularization and application, welding process qualification and technology service, welding equipment research and application, pipeline non-destructive testing technology research and equipment development, testing and comprehensive evaluation of material properties, with welding technology demonstration, training and certification.
"Striving to lead the industry and enjoying great fame at home" is PWL's persistent objective, "raising the overall level of pipeline welding and improving CPP's comprehensive capacity for market operation" is PWL's top responsibility. In light of the actualities of pipeline and storage tank engineering construction, PWL deploys and perfects various hardware and software facilities, strives to become an industrial leading and domestic famous material and joint property test base, a base for displaying CPP's technical strength of installation and welding that conducts scientific and standardized management and has distinctive industrial features, as well as a base for popularizing new welding technologies and processes that can bring window effect into play and facilitates international exchanges and cooperation.


PWL has 55 staff members covering fields such as welding, materials, machinery, automatic control and computer in terms of specialty, including 18 bachelors and 22 masters or above in terms of degree; two professor-level senior engineers, nine senior engineers, two senior technicians, 12 engineers and a technician in terms of title; a senior technical expert of CNPC, a chief expert and four technical experts of CPP in terms of academic accomplishments. After attending trainings, the staff has won many technical qualifications, including six international welding engineers, two international welding inspectors, two international welding technicians, a national registered supervision engineer, a national registered equipment supervision engineer, five Class II non-destructive testers or above, and 14 Class II physiochemical testers.

PWL has established an expert committee based on existing talent pool, which consists of welding professors and doctors from domestic institutions of higher education including four Chinese welding academicians--Lin Shangyang, Pan Jiluan, Guan Qiao and Xu Binshi, as well as domestic and foreign technologists in fields such as welding materials, welding equipment and pipeline engineering.


PWL practices a system of director responsibility based on level-to-level management. The director is fully in charge of the laboratory's operation management. Based on the facts and actual needs of research projects undertaken, the laboratory set short-term and medium & long-term R & D directions and objects, determines key research fields and carries out cooperation and academic exchanges

Gleeble 3500 thermal/mechanical simulation test machine can simulate the hot workability test of the metalkc material, including melting and solidification test, hot tensile test, hot compression test, phase change research and TTT/CCT/SH-CCT curve determination. thermo-mechanical treatment test, zero strength test and thermodynamics fatigue test. etc. It provides support for highgrade steel pipe industrialization application research and high-grade steel pipe weldability analysis research. This equipment has been at the international advanced level.

Micro-shear testing machine

Micro-shear testing machine is to gain a series of shear performance parameters of the matenal through point-by-point shear or double-orifice shear, to analyze the differences of the mechanical properties so as to optimize the welding processes. Till now, there is only one set of this machine in China, which is at international leading level.

High precision oscillographic impact fracture properties test machine is able to reflect the dynamic tear process of the material, vividly reflect the relationship between force and deformation under impact load. map out the energy curve that can provide detailed and reliable data for research and analysis of the material fracture process. The equipment (1000J) is the first one of this kind at home and abroad with international leading level.

It can be apphed in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science. mineralogy. geology and metallurgical engineering. This device is at international advanced level, too.
