Introduction
Overview
The Pipeline Coating Laboratory (PCL) is based on CPP, with its work undertaken by the Coating Technology Research Institute of PRIC and the Laboratory of the Coating Material R & D Center of China Petroleum Pipeline Coating Engineering Co., Ltd. (CPPCE).
PCL is a professional institution engaged in developing pipeline corrosion and protection technologies and researching on corrosion detection and evaluation technologies and anticorrosion construction technologies under CPP. With a history of over 20 years in pipeline and storage tank anticorrosion technology research, it took the lead in China to develop a series of liquid anticorrosive materials such as coal tar enamel, coal tax epoxy coating, antistatic coating, polyurethane weather-resistant coating and solvent-free liquid epoxy coating. In recent years, aiming at difficulties in joints of 3LPE anticorrosive coating of pipelines and joint repair engineering, it has developed internationally advanced new anticorrosive materials such as viscoelastic anticorrosive adhesive tape, baked pressure-sensitive adhesive tape, heat shrinkable wraparound sleeve mechanical joint coating workstation, and applied them in China West-East Gas Pipeline Project. As China's only pipeline anticorrosive material detection laboratory integrating laboratory material testing with external detection and evaluation of in-service pipelines, it is capable of property testing and quality evaluation of anticorrosive materials for domestic and foreign pipeline projects, has conducted comprehensive external testing and evaluation of dozens of domestic long-distance trunk oil & gas pipelines, and undertook the property testing of anticorrosive coating materials in national key pipeline projects.
Orientation: As a major anticorrosion engineering technology R & D platform of CNPC and CPP, PCL undertakes research projects at all levels such as state ministries and commissions, CNPC and CPP, resolves common mechanism, bottleneck technologies and industrialization problem in pipeline anticorrosion, has mapped out a forward-looking development strategy, pioneers the technical progress of the domestic pipeline anticorrosion industry and vies for the commanding height of international frontier technologies.
Major research direction
PCL primarily works on:
(1) New anticorrosive material development
(2) Pipeline and storage tank cathodic protection technology research
(3) Technical research on external detection of in-service pipeline and storage tank corrosion and protection conditions
(4) Technical research on property testing and quality evaluation of anti-corrosive engineering materials
(5) Research on pipeline and storage thank anticorrosion standardization
(6) Pipeline coating process research and pipeline anticorrosion equipment development
Staff
PCL has 43 in-service researchers, including 2 professor-level senior engineers, 11 senior engineers and 17 engineers, those with senior titles account for 30 percent; 34 researchers have bachelor's degrees or above, including three with doctor's degrees and seven with master's degrees, those with postgraduate degrees account for 23 percent. Five researchers have passed the CP2 certification (Cathodic Protection Technician Level 2) of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, US, three have passed the CIP2 (Coating Inspector Program Level 2) certification and three have passed the CIP1 (Coating Inspector Program Level 1).
Operation
PCL practices a system of director responsibility and has established a technical committee consisting of senior technicians in fields such as materials, anticorrosion and machinery to ensure that all major decisions are scientific, democratic and standardized.
